What is ESD Protection?

Reliable system design requires some form of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection. Although several types of transient circuit protection devices are available, care must be taken when deciding which circuit protection device to use. An ill-chosen device will not only be ineffective, but can interfere with the normal operation of the circuit. For transient voltage suppression in portable systems, the circuit protection device must provide the following characteristics:

  • Extremely fast response time
  • Low clamping and operating voltages
  • Capacity to handle high peak ESD currents
  • Ability to remain undamaged by repetitive ESD strikes
  • Minimal size
  • Minimal reverse leakage current
