Internet of Things (IoT) Applications for Wireless Technology

The Internet of Things is rapidly transforming our world by integrating connectivity and intelligence into billions of everyday devices, paving the way for enhanced analytics, superior performance, increased efficiency, and improved lifestyle. Semtech's innovative LoRa® wireless technology platform is at the forefront of this evolution, spearheading the deployment of Low Power, Wide Area (LPWAN) and sensors that are crucial for IoT applications. Semtech’s unique portfolio enables a hybrid approach to smart IoT applications that solve some of the biggest challenges facing our planet. As part of this ecosystem, alongside LoRa, are smart switching solutions and robust electrostatic discharge (ESD) and surge protection technologies that safeguard and boost IoT applications. Explore how these cutting-edge solutions from Semtech and collaborations with the LoRa Alliance are revolutionizing IoT connectivity for a smarter, more connected, and sustainable future.

What is LoRaWAN?

The LoRaWAN® specification is an LPWAN protocol designed to wirelessly connect battery-powered devices to the internet across regional, national, or global networks. It addresses key IoT needs, including two-way communication, end-to-end security, mobility, and localization services.

LoRaWAN operates in unlicensed radio frequency bands and is known for its long-range capabilities (up to 15 km in rural areas), low power consumption, and the ability to connect multiple devices to a single network. The architecture includes end devices, gateways, network servers, and application servers, enabling a scalable and flexible network for diverse IoT applications.

Build vs. Buy: What’s Your Hardware Approach?

Deciding whether to purchase off-the-shelf solutions (or sensors and gateways) featuring LoRa technology or to design a custom product depends heavily on your unique application needs and circumstances? Choosing off-the-shelf sensors and gateways is the quickest path, allowing you to concentrate more on your primary expertise in creating impactful applications or systems. Conversely, designing custom solutions from scratch offers unmatched flexibility and control over how they are implemented but may involve higher design and certification expenses. Regardless of your choice, Semtech offers comprehensive solutions to support whichever path you pursue, ensuring your IoT project is a success.

Category Development Effort Level Developer Goal

Sensors

Least

Software or solution developers who want to focus on developing an application or system and can find acceptable sensor solutions in the ecosystem.

Connectivity

Minimal

A developer who has a sensor design with a standard output like Ethernet or a voltage level and needs a modem to send data. Having two parts (one sensor and one modem) is not an impediment to their deployment.

Boards

Moderate

A developer that wants to integrate their sensor design and communication into a single small package, but does not want to design their own radio integration. New electronic design can often be avoided if using standard adapters or hardware interfaces. Like the previous categories, this also has the advantage of having a pre-certified radio module.

Modules

More

This is a solution for a developer who is looking for a smaller form-factor for their design or more control over the available radio features. This does require creating a board or interface to link the sensor to a modem. Like the previous categories, this option often has the advantage of having a pre-certified radio module.

Chips

Most

This is for the developer who wants the highest level of flexibility and control in their implementation. This option incurs the highest design and certification costs but usually allows for the best cost at volume as well as the smallest and most efficient design.

Your IoT Sensor Design Journey

Semtech’s LoRa ICs operate over various regional unlicensed radio frequency bands. Key considerations include frequency range, link budget, Rx current, and Tx power. Whether you’re migrating from prior generation products, or starting an entirely new design, Semtech’s LoRa IC portfolio is footprint compatible for global frequency coverage.

Gateways

Gateways that transmit sensor data to the Cloud in LoRa-based networks require intricate design due to their intermediary role. Discover the range of Semtech products available to design your own gateway, or explore our ecosystem catalog to find commercially available, off-the-shelf gateways that can meet your specific requirements.

Real-Life IoT Applications

By utilizing LoRaWAN technology, smart cities can enhance urban life through efficient asset tracking, such as monitoring public transportation vehicles, managing parking spaces, and tracking street infrastructure. In agriculture, IoT-enabled sensors powered by LoRaWAN help farmers monitor soil moisture, weather, and crop health in real time, resulting in higher yields and better resource management. Additionally, LoRa technology is making significant strides in sectors like healthcare, where its applications range from remote patient monitoring to inventory management within hospitals, ensuring timely availability of critical medical supplies. These applications demonstrate LoRaWAN’s versatility and its impact on enhancing connectivity and operational efficiency across various industries. Indeed, the capabilities of LoRaWAN extend beyond agriculture and smart cities.

The applications of LoRaWAN are endless. With its robust and scalable infrastructure, LoRaWAN enhances operational efficiency and data collection, facilitating improved resource management, remote monitoring, and automation across numerous industries. A few key markets include:
