Semtech has announced the launch of a new product in its LoRa Core portfolio, the LoRa Corecell Reference Design for full duplex gateway applications in the U.S. 902 – 928MHz ISM band. The new turnkey gateway solution enables the expansion of network capacity for outdoor and indoor applications, such as smart metering, smart building and smart factory, says Semtech. Moreover, the reference design enables network owners to increase network capacity while deploying fewer gateways, providing cost savings to end customers when compared to cellular alternatives. Seattle-based Spaceflight Inc. announced it will have 36 customer payloads onboard the next SpaceX rideshare mission. The Transporter-2 Falcon 9 launch to sun synchronous orbit (SSO) is expected no earlier than late June 2021 from Florida and will include numerous IoT satellites, a couple of RF survey satellites, and likely several imaging satellites. The SpaceBEEs are 1/4 U cubesats using licensed spectrum to communicate with Semtech LoRA devices on the ground. Read more
In addition to Bluetooth, Amazon Sidewalk is adding “long-range wireless technology known as LoRa to the Sidewalk network via certain Echo and Ring devices.” According to Semtech’s vice president, IoT product marketing and strategy, “when placed inside a device like an Echo speaker, inside a home, the range can … be about a mile.” Read more
In this episode, we discuss the tradeoffs between alternative wireless connectivity solutions and how LoRa is being used in applications to combat the spread of COVID-19. Read more
The benefits of having devices that are nearly always connected has never been more obvious than it is today. In that regard, cellular networks and technologies like 5G have proven to be incredibly valuable. At the same time, there’s no denying that integrating cellular connectivity into every connected device we own isn’t a reasonable option for both practical and economic reasons. It’s simply too expensive and too challenging to do that. Various flavors of WiFi and even Bluetooth, of course, have also become an essential part of the connectivity fabric and are a great solution for many devices and applications. Read more
Despite the massive roll-out of LoRaWAN® IoT terrestrial private and public networks in more than 160 countries, many regions remain unconnected and LoRaWAN network service providers have low or no economic return to invest in these remote areas.
The satellite, running on LoRaWAN, also features Semtech’s Long Range Frequency Hoping Spread Spectrum new data rate (LR-FHSS), which was endorsed by the LoRa Alliance at end of 2020, offering a unique opportunity for terrestrial and satellite LoRaWAN Networks to collaborate in bringing ubiquitous coverage.
