The Internet of Things (IoT) has largely been an earthbound phenomenon, but to bring IoT everywhere on Earth, companies have to leave the planet. The challenge with satellite IoT technology is that there are a lot of companies attempting to provide IoT connectivity, each with a small number of satellites, and attempting to raise funding to scale-up their infrastructure. By using a common standard that is entirely interoperable with terrestrial networks, all companies with an interest in this can benefit from sharing resources, ultimately delivering a better service to customers with lower capital investment. Semtech announced that Alibaba Cloud, the third largest public cloud services provider globally and cloud provider in the China market, has released a new Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled location tracker based on Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN protocol. Read more
The Beagle tracker provides accurate, GPS-free location tracking and simplifies deployment for those without much Internet of Things (IoT) experience. Read more
We kick off with a look at one ICT company’s work to bring the benefits of IoT to councils. Wales-based Pinacl Solutions started its work in the IoT and smart city place around two and a half years ago with Newport City Council. Back then, Pinacl operated a fibre network in the city, along with public Wi-Fi for all the council’s public-facing venues and buildings, and a small concession city centre Wi-Fi network (both the latter use technology from Ruckus Networks). Semtech has announced that ITK, a French supplier of IoT-based smart agriculture applications, has developed a new cattle health monitoring solution based on Semtech’s LoRa devices. The FarmLife smart agriculture service and its LoRa-enabled sensors detect cattle estrus, drive improved nutrition and predict the onset of disease to help ranchers better monitor their herd. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, it is estimated that nearly one third of the food produced (about 1.3 billion tons) globally is not consumed. To help tackle this billion-dollar problem, an innovative solution is being deployed to detect one of the key factors driving food waste: Spoilage due to fluctuations in temperature. Read more
Semtech said that IoT gateway company Definium Technologies has deployed a new enterprise-grade, statewide network in Tasmania, Australia, based on Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN protocol. Read more
